Built on water, feeding Lekki residents

Farm City is an example of the kinds of establishments that will shape the future of the retail space in Nigeria.

Farm City offers a chance to shop and relax in the same space.

Most Lagos Island residents usually have to either go to the numerous malls that dot the island or take a long drive to a supermarket to shop, then another long drive to a bar or lounge for some relaxation.

For Lekki residents, there is a one-in-all solution to all that moving around and what not. If you have not heard of Farm City, here’s a little introduction: fresh farm produce, seafood, groceries, bulk purchases, and a lounge (yes, you can get alcohol here too).

If you’re wondering how that is an introduction, all of those aforementioned things are all components of Farm City. Inhabiting a sizeable expanse of land that was once half wasteland, half dumpsite, Farm City was founded on a vision geared at delivering the best service(s) at the most affordable prices possible. It is located along the popular Admiralty Way in Lekki, and it has what many will call a bit of everything. It has a store where you can get fresh produce (tomatoes, tubers, fresh fruits etc.) like you would find at the market at Oniru or Oyingbo, seafood, groceries (household items, beverages, cereals etc.), and also a lounge where you can grab a drink or two after all that shopping.

Founded by a humble farmer, who would rather not be named, Farm City as an establishment is a pioneer that merges shopping and relaxation without being huge and having 100 different stores like you would find in a mall. And this is not something that is easy to pull off. Especially when you’re talking fresh produce and seafood, which are commodities that could damage very easily.

When I spoke to the Farm City founder, he revealed that all the produce are brought in from his farms in Mowe, Ogun state because he just wouldn’t compromise service delivery for anything. Also, when I asked him about the property were Farm City stands today, he revealed that he simply saw an opportunity to give his idea the visibility it deserved and today, competitors wish they had his vision.

Such entrepreneurial prowess is also evident in how Farm City is run and the services it offers. The lounge is located right beside the water so you can experience that cool sea breeze first hand, the waiters and attendants are nice and courteous, drinks and other consumables are very affordable – compared to similar establishments – with a stage for performances and things of that nature, and an almost unbeatable all-round ambience that is dripping in tranquility. It is also conveniently located along Admiralty way, Lekki Phase 1, so you can’t miss it even if you tried.

Farm City is an example of the kinds of establishments that will shape the future of the retail space in Nigeria. With a vision like that of the farmer, budding businesses like Farm City echo the spirit and inspiration behind every true Nigerian entrepreneur.

Pulse Waterfront Wednesdays takes place at Farm City every Wednesday by 5pm.
