Ghana's president, Nana Addo assures citizens that "flawed" IMF programme will not be extended

This was disclosed by President Nana Akufo-Addo when he held a media encounter at the Flagstaff House on Tuesday (July 18, 2017).

When asked why his government was seeking an extension of the IMF bailout, he clarified that “the IMF programme is going to be completed in April next year (2018).”

“The IMF programme is not going to be extended. We will complete the programme. The last budget that will presented under the IMF budget will be in November 2017,” he added.

He said that his government hopes “to create a Ghana beyond aid not a Ghana without aid.”

His response comes after several stakeholders asked that the government extends the country’s IMF programme.

The Civil Society Organisations Platform argued that this will ensure the structural reforms are implemented properly.

A Lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School, Dr. Godfred Alufar Bokpin, said “the IMF itself has the incentive to ensure that the programme is extended because Ghana for a while had been a success of the IMF programmes in sub-Saharan Africa and they don’t want this to be tainted and if a request comes from the government, they will not say no.”
