Only two of the top 20 companies in Ghana have a female CEO

In a blow for affirmative action, Ghana's corporate space is still an all boys club

Only two of the top 20 companies on Ghana’s Club 100 list has a female CEO in a revelation that proves just how far away Ghana is from making strides towards empowering women in the corporate space.

As of the January 2018, the Ghana Club 100 which is the definitive ranking of big business in Ghana has its first woman CEO appearing at number 13 with the managing director of McOttley Capital Ltd. Next on the list is the managing director of Barclays Bank, Patience Akyianu.

This is an improvement on the previous 2015 edition when there no female CEO's heading the top 20 companies. The top ranked on that list were Standard Charterd Bank's Mansa Nettey and UBA's Abiola Bawuah who appeared at number 28.

For a country that has always prided itself on being a leader in affirmative action in Africa ,the list makes for disappointing reading.

Compared to the US for example, female CEOs in the Fortune 500 are not quite the norm yet, but they have been making strides.

As of 2017, there are 32 female CEOs on the list, meaning that 6.4% of the U.S.’s biggest companies (by revenue) are run by women. This is the highest proportion of female CEOs in the 63-year history of the Fortune 500.
