8 times Ghana came out better against Nigeria

Despite the strong bilateral ties, the two West African neighbours are seen as rival countries when it comes to sports and music

We look at eight times Ghana beat Nigeria to something big.

Democracy

Ghana is often referred to as the beacon of democracy in Africa after holding consecutive successful elections and transitions and championing human rights and social development. Ghana is rated more peaceful and politically stable than Nigeria, which has recently been hit by acts of terrorism.

The Black Stars of Ghana have won the continental championship four times, one more than their West African rivals. The Black Stars beat the Super Eagles in the quarterfinals of the 2008 edition before going on to axe them in the Semifinals at the 2010 edition hosted by Angola.

World Cup

World Cup Ghana became only the second African country after Cameroon to reach the quarterfinals and almost made history against Argentina but for an injury-time Luiz Suarez handball that denied Ghana from winning the game. The Black Stars went on to lose the game on penalties. The lost takes nothing from the Ghana-Nigeria supremacy debate as Nigeria has not gone beyond the round of 16 stage.

Independence

Independence Ghana became the first Sub Sahara Africans country to gain independence from colonial rule, against beating their rivals, Nigeria.

Winning U-20 World Cup

In 2009, Ghana became the first African country to win the youth world cup by beating Brazil in the final. No African country has been able to replicate that feat, not even Nigeria.

The food battle has been raging on social media but Ghana seems to have a comfortable lead in terms of taste and preference of the rice variety.

English Speaking 

The two countries are former colonies of Britain and have English as their official language but Ghana seems to have a better command over the language than their anglophone counterpart
