Ghanaian kid Gabriel Ennin just made the Scripps National Spelling Bee for the second year running

Gabriel Ennin is a champion of the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette Spelling Bee again and will be heading to Washington D.C. for the Scripps National Spelling Bee for the second consecutive year.

Ghanaian kid Gabriel Ennin just made the Scripps National Spelling Bee for the second year running

The Ghanaian will be making a second consecutive appearance at the Scripps National Spelling Bee after emerging the champion of the 25th annual Lancaster Eagle-Gazette Spelling Bee which took place at the Thomas Ewing Junior High School on Saturday, March 25, 2017.

The seventh-grade Pickerington Ridgeview Junior High School student has to battle 46 other students on his way to being a champion for the second straight year.

Gabriel and Joshua Mason, the first runner-up in the competition and also a schoolmate of the champions had an interesting about of around 20 minutes in the final round.

Ghanaian student Gabriel was crowned the champion after Joshua missed the spelling of ‘omelet’ which also has an alternate spelling ‘omelette’.

The champion of the 25th annual Lancaster Eagle-Gazette contest said following his win:

“I was just thinking, 'Don't panic. If you get a word that you don't know, just ask the definition, ask for a sentence, word origin’”

“We are very proud of him. He's been working very hard at it, and he wanted it badly too. So we were confident that he was going to do well. But great credit to all the kids that were here," said Gabriel’s father Eric Ennin.

Newspaper Eagle-Gazette will contribute $2000 for Gabriel Ennin’s trip as he and his family travel to Washington D.C. for the Scripps National Spelling Bee.

Gabriel will be joined by three other Ghanaians at the competition which is set to kick off on May 28 to June 2.

Lily Ama Tugbah of Solidarity International School in Ghana was the first Ghanaian to qualify after winning Ghana’s Spelling Bee.

Adom Appiah, a seventh-grade student at the Spartanburg Day School joined Lily following winning the 2017 Upstate Regional Spelling Bee.

Nana Addo, a Ghanaian student of Dakota Dunes earned his spot at the Scripps National Spelling Bee after winning the regional competition at the University of South Dakota.
