Football lessons that can make George Weah a successful president

The former world best has been sworn in as the 24th President of Liberia at an eruptive ceremony in Monrovia

We highlight some football qualities that can make the former football star successful in his presidency.

Teamwork

Politics is teamwork. It is impossible to excel even as a President alone, no matter how determined or innovative you are as a leader. If you are unable to put your team together to achieve a common goal, you are doomed for failure. At least, we have proof of Mr. Weah teamwork. If he can transfer the understanding of division of labour and specialization into his Presidency, success will definitely be assured.

His vision on the goal

The former world best footballers made his mark as one of the best finishers during his playing days. Having had to fill the void created in the AC Milan by the departure of Dutch legend Marco Van Basten, Weah lived up to expectations in front of goal.

In politics, goal-getting is what will determine your re-election or otherwise and with Mr. Weah’s vision for goals, we are assured he will score some political goals as President.

His winning mentality

Being a part of the AC Milan that won three Serie A’s, Weah’s winning mentality cannot be underrated. Expectations are that he will transfer that mentality, which has been evident during his political life, into his Presidency. If Weah wins, Liberia wins.

His discipline

The game of football is played with rules; same with politics. There are inherent rules that govern the business of politics and once one is following those rules and being disciplined, political success is assured. The penalty for indiscipline lies with electorates and if Mr. Weah can apply the same reasons why he won’t dare score a goal with his hand in his presidential life, he will always be in the good books of electorates.

His physical strength and work rate

Politics and governance require something level of physical strength to be able to do all the runs that your position requires you to do. Especially as spokesperson and figurehead of the government, President Weah will be expected to be at major functions and both nationally and internationally. This will require some level of strength which we are guaranteed he will be able to manage knowing his work rate during his days as a footballer.
