Gold Star widow breaks her silence, says Trump couldn't remember husband's name and said 'he knew what he signed up for'

Gold Star widow Myeshia Johnson spoke out Monday, confirming key details Rep. Frederica Wilson shared about President Donald Trump's condolence call.

  • The Gold Star widow Myeshia Johnson appeared on "Good Morning America" on Monday.
  • Her husband, Sgt. La David Johnson, was killed in an ambush in Niger early this month.
  • A condolence call President Donald Trump made to Johnson has sparked controversy after a congresswoman said he was disrespectful.
  • Johnson on Monday echoed key details that Rep. Frederica Wilson shared.

The Gold Star widow Myeshia Johnson broke her silence on Monday, saying President Donald Trump did not remember her husband's name and said he "knew what he signed up for" in a condolence call last Tuesday.

Her telling of key details of the call echoed those first shared by Rep. Frederica Wilson of Florida. Wilson was riding in a limo with Johnson when the president called, and she later said she heard parts of the call on speakerphone.

Sgt. La David Johnson was one of the four Green Berets killed in an October 4 ambush by militants in Niger in an incident that Congress is asking more and more questions about.

Appearing on "Good Morning America," Johnson told her side of the story.

"The president said that, 'He knew what he signed up for, but it hurts anyways.' It made me cry because I was very angry at the tone of his voice and how he said it," she said. "He couldn't remember my husband's name."

She said Trump told her he had her husband’s report in front of him, and she got the impression he needed the report to remember his name.

"I heard him stumbling on trying to remember my husband's name," she said. "And that's what hurt me the most, because if my husband is out here fighting for our country, and he risked his life for our country, why can't you remember his name? That's what made me upset and cry even more."

She said she didn't say anything to Trump, "just listened," and cried when she got off the phone. When asked whether Wilson had "lied" as the president said she did, Johnson said she was "100% correct." Trump tweeted about Wilson multiple times over the weekend, calling her "wacky" and a "disaster."

"The phone was on speakerphone," Johnson said. "Why would we fabricate something like that?"

She said she didn't have anything else she wanted to say to Trump but did want to know why it took the military 48 hours to recover her husband's body, as the most recent reports have indicated — a question senators want answered as well.

After the interview aired on Monday, Trump tweeted, "I had a very respectful conversation with the widow of Sgt. La David Johnson, and spoke his name from beginning, without hesitation!"

Johnson is pregnant with a girl, whom she said she would tell "her father is a hero."
