Student arrested for insulting Zambian President using fake Facebook account

Police have arrested a 35-year-old student on charges of insulting President of Zambia

35-year-old student Edward Makayi has been arrested by the Zambian police for posing with fake Facebook account to verbally abuse President Edgar Lungu and other government officials the on social media platform.

His Facebook account was under the name Royson Edwards M.

The arrest of the student was confirmed by Zambian's Police spokesperson, Esther Mwata Katongo.

According to the spokesperson, Edward Makayi is also accused of defaming some government ministers, members of the governing party, Mr Lungu’s press aide and the head of the Zambian police.

Local media reports say the arrested student studies engineering at a privately-owned university. He is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday.

He and his lawyers are yet to comment on the allegation.

Zambia's social media terrain has caused several arrests.

In April 2017, an opposition chief in the country was also arrested over posts he made on Facebook.
