Ghana coach Kwasi Appiah plots overtake of Egypt as World Cup qualifiers loom

The Black Stars of Ghana have picked up just a point in qualifying while Egypt leads the group with a hundred percent record after two matches days but Appiah, who was brought back to arrest the team’s disastrous start sees an opportunity ahead of his team’s crucial him game against Congo.

“We're sitting on one point, while Egypt have got six," he said. "However, we're going to try to win our upcoming matches and leapfrog them."

“Congo has a good team. Nobody in this group can be taken lightly; on the contrary, we have to approach every match in the same manner, with the same desire," he told FIFA.com

“Every team has played two matches, so we've got four games left each and 12 points to play for. Anything is still possible, so long as we keep working hard and we perform well. We'll have to see what happens, but I think anyone in the group can still qualify."

Appiah made several changes in his first competitive game in charge, introducing a new generation of talent and was rewarded with a positive performance as his team mauled Ethiopia in an AFCON 2019 qualifier.

"I'm satisfied with the squad at my disposal. I just want to help them compete better in the remainder of the qualifying campaign and beyond. We have some young players in the team and we've got to ensure they kick on in the future."

Appiah is expected to name his squad for the game against Congo but is likely to be without captain Asamoah Gyan who picked up an injury for his club Kayserispor, meaning new Brighton and Hove signing Raphael Dwamena will lead the line against the unpredictable Congolese team.
