Youth to benefit from $100million capacity building programme

The government of Ghana has tabled US$100m to empower the youth to create their own jobs.

Government has announced plans to launch a US$100 million National Employment and Implementation Plan to build new graduates and unemployed youth up for employment by equipping the with entrepreneurial skills.The Business Development Minister, Ibrahim Mohammed Awal, broke the news the UK-Ghana Chamber of Commerce (UKGCC) while discussing new strategic to drive businesses in the country with its members.

According to minister, the US$ 100 million capacity building programme tailored for unemployed youth would help acquire skills to create their own businesses.

"We believe this will curb unemployment and make Ghana number one business destination in the sub-region’’ he said. Mr. Awal further revealed He also reiterated government’s commitment to provide tax relieves for start-ups.

He asserted government’s commitment to uplifting start-ups by providing tax relieves. Also, he said that 70 percent of all public funded projects would go to locally owned businesses, out of which 10 percent will also be directed to start-ups.

The meeting involved about 20 members of the UKGCC, from the telecoms, energy, logistics, finance, legal and business associations. It also created a platform to share their concerns and challenges with the minister.

The meeting was presented the minister an avenue to clarify issues concerning local and foreign businesses, and ways to improve the economy. Mr. Tony Burkson, Chief Executive Officer of the UKGCC said he was excited with the efforts that government to better conditions for businesses in the country.

He also appealed to government to implement an internal policy that would protect local businesses and prevent multinationals from pervading the atmosphere. The UK - Ghana Chamber of Commerce (UKGCC) facilitates and promote the ever-increasing need for collaboration between SME's and large multi-national corporations operating in the UK and Ghana.
