Internet penetration in Ghana boosts e-commerce

Th high level of internet penetration being experienced currently in Ghana will boost e-commerce in Ghana, says Sacha Poignonnec, CEO of Jumia.

According to him, a study conducted in 2016 in 15 countries in Africa showed significant increase in the usage, especially in Ghana, which is very good for the future of internet shopping.

He made the observation in Accra as part of its preparations for the annual mobile week celebration this year.

It has promised to offer discount on mobile phones during the period.

Mr. Sacha said mobile phone subscription in Africa stood at 960 million pieces while Ghana had 36.6 million in 2016, more than double its population.

Africa’s internet penetration, he said, was 18 percent while Ghana recorded 28 percent, indicating an increment in the same year.

“Jumia, which is the biggest internet trading platform and operates in 23 African countries currently, is poised to encourage hassle free e-market for consumers where one will just pick a phone, place an order and it would be delivered to their doorsteps even before payment is made making it very safe, he said.

Mr. Sacha said, “Fraudulent activities are not part of us, this is why we always insist on quality, competitive pricing and transparency from manufacturers in order to be fair in their dealings with the customer.”
