WAEC denies rumours of cancellation

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has denied reports that it has asked some schools to re-register some candidates for next years examination.

Social media reports suggested that some candidates in the Eastern Region will be made to re-register due to some inconsistencies in the index numbers.

But in an interview with Accra based Citi FM the head of WAEC, Rev. Dr. Samuel Nii Ollenu said the rumors are untrue.

"we don't intend cancelling any papers anywhere or asking people to re-write any exams".

He said the people peddling such rumours are only being mischievous. He said "sometimes I believe that people just want to play mischief, to serve their own interest".

A total of 461,013 candidates from 14,267 public and private Junior High Schools are participating in the examination at 1,598 examination centres across the country. The examination which started on Monday, June 13 will last till Friday, June 17, 2016.

The candidates are 239,963 males and 221,050 females. The exams are being supervised by 15,695 invigilators.

Dr. Ollenu said though they have recorded some incidents they do not call for the cancellation of papers.

"The incidents that we are hearing of are the normal ones like people being caught with mobile phones when they are not suppose to. These are teachers not students," he added.

"We don't have any intention neither have we announced that we are going to cancel any paper and re-administer any exam," he reiterated.
