Nana Bonsra Afriyie II contends many brilliant students have had their education cut short after Junior High School because they could not pass one or two subjects at the basic level, even though they are excellent at other subjects.

He believes all pupils should be allowed to progress to the Senior High School level where they can study courses of their choice, instead of having to pass over 10 subjects, some of which they have no interest in, before making progress in their education.

The Chief was speaking during a town hall meeting organized by the information ministry on Tuesday, August 08, in the Adansi North District.

Nana Bonsra Afriyie II advised government to complement such a policy with more day Senior High Schools which are easier to manage and have the capacity to admit many students.

He added, “If the constitution states that every child is entitled to free education, then what is the use of the B.E.C.E; thus it should be eliminated.”

The call is in line with a similar one by the 2016 flagbearer of the Progressive People's Party, Dr Paa Kwesi Nduom who advocates that there should be no exams for pupils until the second cycle level.

He argued during the 2016 electioneering period that for the benefits of Ghana's Free Compulsory Universal Basic Education (FCUBE) to be realised, it is necessary that the BECE is scrapped to allow students to progress to the second-cycle level, where they could acquire employable skills, even if they are unable to continue to the tertiary stage.
