Graduate studies not merely for increased salaries – UDS Vice-Chancellor

Professor Yakubu has entreated students to strive to be relevant to the society and make a difference in their environment.

“It is morally wrong to see graduate training as personal aggrandizement and increase in salary upon return to your jobs”, Professor Haruna Yakubu, Vice-Chancellor of the University for Development Studies (UDS) has stated.

Professor Yakubu, who said this during the matriculation of graduate students for UDS’ Sandwich programme for the 2015 / 2016 academic year in Tamale on Wednesday, entreated students to, instead, strive to be relevant to the society and make a difference in their environment.

A total of 220 students have been admitted to pursue various sandwich programmes at masters degree level at the university.

Professor Yakubu said, “Our country requires well-trained and analytical graduates to overcome the challenges confronting the nation and propel itself into the development that seems elusive”.

He, therefore, entreated the students to use “This additional training to make yourselves relevant to Ghana and the world”, rather than hoping for increase in salary upon return to your jobs.

He said UDS had increased the number of sandwich programmes on offer for graduate studies at its various faculties including Integrated Development Studies, Planning and Land Management, Business and Law, Education, Agriculture, and Mathematical Sciences.

He advised the new students to remain disciplined and committed to their programmes of study to enable them to complete the studies on schedule.
