2 Hong Kong student leaders charged for 2014 protests

Two Hong Kong students who led the 2014 anti-China demonstrations in 2014 have been charged with obstructing police during a protest on Tuesday.

 

Joshua Wong, head of student activist group, Scholarism and Nathan Law, secretary general of the Hong Kong Federation of Students, both rose to fame after leading the pro-democracy protests.

Police charged both at a police station in Hong Kong in in connection with a June 11 protest outside the office of China's top official in the city, the Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

According to Police documents, both were released on bail and ordered to report to court on Friday.

He said he did not see himself obstructing police in a video shown to him at the police station, adding that he needed to consult with his lawyer.

Wong however confirmed that they had burnt a copy of a controversial policy paper from China's State Council.

"Obviously, the police have their own political agenda, which is to crack down on activists like us," Wong told reporters.

But the police said they handled every case fairly and would take appropriate action against illegal acts.
