Government has released some 77 acres of land to the Muslim community in Ghana for the construction of a university.

The construction of the university will be under the supervision of the national Chief Imam, Dr. Sheikh Osman Nuhu Sharubutu.

According to a statement from the Chief Imam’s office said, “The multi-purpose university educational complex is intended for the goodness and benefit of all Ghanaians, particularly the underprivileged in the community."

The Chief Imam is confident that the establishment of the university will also enhance quality education and training to all children of school going age.

Meanwhile Dr. Sharubutu was delighted that government has directed the Ministry for Water Resources, Works and Housing to release the parcel of land for the project.

“The multiple development partners (financiers) and philanthropists from Turkey and Saudi Arabia are determined with full commitment to complete the project,” the statement added.

The project has been in the pipeline for more than 10 years, but has stalled as a result of disagreements over ownership of the land.

A decision by the Tema Development Corporation (TDC) in 2006 to offer some 361 acres of land to an Italian company led to a portion of the adjacent land belonging to the Muslim community being taken away.

The university will be located at Adjei Kojo - Suncity in the Tema Metropolis.
