Ghana has for some time now been a witness to several viral internet challenges. These challenges have been nothing but entertaining.

From the most memorable to the less memorable ones, social media users have kept themselves busy with some bizarre trends. Here are a few of them:

Azonto Challenge

The popular music and dance took Ghana and the rest of the world by storm around the year 2012. The genre brought a new flavour to music in the world. The fun part was that Ghanaians, both young and old, were caught by the Azonto fever as they took turns in showing off their most creative azonto dance moves on the internet to the admiration of many.

Ice Bucket Challenge

The craze took over the Ghanaian entertainment community after having started in the United States of America. The initiative was meant to raise funds to support people suffering from Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS,) a nervous system disease that attacks nerve cells. And the activity was simple: It involved dumping a bucket of ice water on one’s head to promote awareness of the disease and encourage donation to researchers on the diseases.

The target group for the initiative was celebrities and hence in Ghana some celebrities like Ama K. Abrebrese, David Oscar, Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari and Michael Essien, were seen posting their 15 seconds video on social media after having their turns.

But some Ghanaians took a swipe at these celebrities who indulged in the challenge, saying that they were copying blindly from the West without paying close attention to details involved.

Mannequin challenge

From ordinary people to famous personalities, the mannequin challenge fever gripped all and sundry all over the world, and Ghana was no exception. To see groups of high school students or workers in a company come together to instantly hit random poses and freeze like mannequins was just exhilarating. Many Ghanaians shared videos of such experiences on the internet using the hashtag #MannequinChallenge.

SHS Diaries

Even though the source of this trend is unknown, it caught fire quickly on Facebook as it brought back so many memories, funny and sometimes crazy moments experienced during Senior High School (SHS). Old students of various senior high schools in Ghana in the early part of this year joined in promoting the trend by reminiscing their days in high school. Under the hashtag #highschooldiaries, the trend at least showed how Ghanaian students cherished their alma maters. Here are some of them:

Follow the ladder challenge

It took only 30 seconds of an entire 10 minutes song to start a whole new exciting social media challenge in Ghana dubbed #FollowTheLadderChallenge.

“Follow The Ladder To Heaven”, a Gospel song by Nigerian Gospel veteran Sister Agnes Iro is currently the new social media anthem in Ghana and people are going crazy about it.

It is unclear how it all started but many attribute it to what they call the terribly edited video for the song. Since the video went viral, Ghanaians have done their versions and it’s entertaining. Here are some of them:
