GES releases approved fees for SHSs

According to the GES, boarding students are expected to pay GH¢724.50, while day students will be required to pay GH¢405.50

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has released approved fees for second-cycle institutions for the 2015/16 academic year.

Boarding students are expected to pay GH¢724.50, while day students will be required to pay GH¢405.50.

The Director-General of the GES, Mr Jacob A.M. Kor, who signed the letter on the approved fees to be forwarded to all heads of second-cycle institutions, said admission fees would be GH¢20 and examination fees GH¢10 for boarders, day and technical students.

The letter said for boarders, feeding fee at GH¢3.30 per day would amount to GH¢308, while entertainment, library and SRC fees would be GH¢2, GH¢3 and GH¢2 respectively.

Others such as cumulative records, sports and culture fees will be GH¢5, GH¢5, GH¢3, respectively. However, boarders would each pay GH¢2 as maintenance fees.

Uniform and clothing

For uniform and clothing, made up of school uniform (two sets), house dress (two sets) and P.E. kits, each student, boarder or day student, would pay GH¢190, while technical students would be required, in addition to the GH¢190, to pay GH¢30 for overcoat, which the letter said was optional.

Teaching and learning fees

For approved teaching and learning fees, both boarders and day students would be required to pay a cumulative figure of Gh¢122.50 to cover medical exams, GH¢15; National Science/Maths quiz, GH¢5, and Science development GH¢3.

The rest are one supplementary and three core literature books, GH¢45; nine exercise books, GH¢13.50; four note books at GH¢36 and Internet study mate (optional) GH¢5, while technical students would pay GH¢120.

PTA approved fees

The letter also gave the approved PTA levies for boarders as GH¢52, while day students would pay GH¢43 each, which would cover PTA dues, incentive package, development levy and utilities. Others are house dues, co-curricular activities, ICT and cadet corps (optional).

The letter reminded the heads that admission fees would be charged only once on admission, while the PTA was reminded to prioritise and execute projects within a ceiling to be determined by management and approved by the Director-General.

To heads

“Heads are advised not to include any levies which are not approved by the Director-General. Any complaint raised by parents or guardians about such illegal fees will attract severe sanctions for heads,” the letter stressed.

It said it was envisaged that heads of schools would go strictly according to what had been stipulated.

“By this letter, regional directors, metropolitan, municipal and district directors of education are entreated to ensure strict compliance of the approved fees,” the letter concluded.
