Govt to announce implementation plan of Free SHS

The implementation of the government's campaign promise to provide free public senior high school (SHS) education will begin from the 2017/2018 academic year and Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh is expected to roll out plans for its implementation.

The free public SHS education was aimed at building an educated populace for speedy national development and progress.

By free SHS, there will be no admission fees, no library fees, no science centre fees, no computer laboratory fees, no examination fees, no utility fees. There will be free textbooks, free boarding and free meals and day students will get a meal at school for free.

The Free SHS policy will also cover agricultural, vocational and technical institutions at the high school level.

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo at the recent media encounter hinted that well-endowed schools would be required to reserve a percentage of admissions for students from less privileged basic schools.

He said "The Policy that is being devised by the ministry of education is that the so–called relieved schools in Ghana are going to be required to reserve a 30 percent of places in them to those schools that come from more disadvantaged backgrounds and locations.

Nana Addo added that "And it forms a very important part of the reason for the advocacy that we have given to this idea over the last few years."
