Martin Thompson elected new SRC president of GIJ

The Level 300 Journalism student undid five other candidates to emerge victorious in the 2017 SRC elections.

Thompson was announced winner of the 2017 SRC presidential elections after a tension-filled election was concluded on Sunday.

The level 300 Journalism student will man the affairs of the Institute for the 2017/18 academic year.

Thompson polled a total of 569 votes to secure victory ahead of his competitors, with his closest rival Nicholas Antwi gaining 549 votes.

The election process began on Thursday, where regular students were allowed to vote, while students from the weekend school also had their turn to vote on Sunday before the results were finally declared.

The 2017 elections will go down as one of the most tension-filled elections the institute has ever witnessed after some chaotic scenes were witnessed during the counting of votes.

However, the timely intervention of the police helped calm the situation.

Martin Thompson will now take over from Benyamin Madugu as president of the GIJ SRC.

Other candidates who contested in the presidential race include Sekyere Atuahehe Kwesi who polled 346 votes, Jean-Philip Lawson polled 189 votes, Jonathan Adjei Mawutor had 281 votes, while Basit could only manage 32 votes.

In other portfolios, Justina Odoi was elected as the Women’s Commissioner after gathering 638 of the total votes, while Sampson Aforde and Nathaniel Alpha emerged as External Affairs Commissioner and General Secretary respectively.

Tony Bonsu was also elected as the institute’s Organizing secretary, with Osei Kwame Wise emerging as the Financial Secretary, after both contested unopposed.
