ECG disconnects Koforidua Poly over unpaid bills

Mr. Mensah-Livingston, Registrar of the Polytechnic told Citi News the polytechnic owes ECG electricity bills in excess of GHS 790,000.

Despite directives from cabinet asking the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) not to disconnect power supply to educational and health institutions because of the critical services they are perceived to provide, the company has cut Koforidua Polytechnic off the national power grid.

Mr. Mensah-Livingston, Registrar of the Polytechnic told Citi News that the polytechnic owes ECG electricity bills in excess of GHS 790,000.

He stated that ECG in a meeting with the Director of Finance at the institution issued a 24th August deadline date for the payment of the debt owed the company, lest it would disconnect the school.

Meanwhile, Emmanuel Sam, Commercial Manager of ECG in the Eastern Region has said that the disconnection is to cause ‘discomfort to the administration’ in order for them to pay the accumulated bills.

“This is not just power disconnection; the move is not just a mere exercise but rather a strategic tool we’ve employed to recoup all our monies in the system”

“We feel that the decision to disconnect the institution’s administration block alone, apparently the nerve centre of the school from the national grid will cause them distress in order to arrange quickly and pay up their bills,” he said on Kasapa FM’s on Wednesday.
