University teachers declare indefinite strike

Members of the University Teachers Association (UTAG) have declared an indefinite strike

University teachers in the country have joined the fray of discontented public sector workers who have laid down their tools, declaring an indefinite strike over nonpayment of book and research allowances.

The university teachers are striking over government’s refusal to pay their book and research allowance. The teachers say government has failed to fulfill its promise of paying the allowances in spite of numerous promises to do so.

The National President of UTAG, Dr. Samuel Bekoe, said government is yet to acknowledge numerous letters written over the allowances.

A statement issued after the meeting said members at the University of Cape Coast (UCC) will not be in lecture halls on Friday, August 7 when school reopens.

The lecturers say they will not take part in any academic work if government does not pay them immediately.

Meanwhile, there is unrest agitations on the labour front as members of the Ghana medical Association are on an indefinite strike over conditions of service.

The Government and Hospital Pharmacists Association (GHOSPA) are currently on strike to demand better working conditions.

But President John Mahama said he will not go beyond the budget allocation in dealing with the Ghana Medical Association's demand for conditions of service.

The President said yielding to the demands by the doctors will mean derailing efforts made by government so far on the Single Spine Pay Policy. He was speaking at the 80th anniversary of the Ghana Registered Midwives Association of Ghana today.
