Students of the Ghana School of Surveying and Mapping (GSSM) have threatened to picket the Flagstaff House if President Nana Akufo-Addo does not step in to prevent the closure of the school.

At a press conference on Tuesday, the Lands and Natural Resources Minister, John Amewu, also directed that the school’s staff be reassigned.

“Students are directed to vacate the school premises and the hostel facilities with immediate effect,” Mr. Amewu said.

But reacting to the development at a press conference on Wednesday, the SRC president Bright Joseph Nsiah, said the students might be forced to demonstrate if the decision to close the school is not reversed.

“Our next action is to march to the office of the presidency and if the need arises that we need to spend the night, we would do that. The students of Ghana School of Surveying and Mapping are ever ready. As it happened with the nurses, definitely we can do same, we would sleep over there. We want to protect and defend the legacy of Sir Gordon Guggisburg,” he stated.

“Can you go to Achimota School and ask them to vacate their premises? Can you go to the University of Ghana and ask them to vacate their premises? So why are you treating the ordinary students of Ghana School of Surveying and Mapping this way? It is unfair and we demand immediate intervention from the presidency,” he added.

Background

Some students of the school went on a rampage on May 2, 2017, following claims that the school’s land has been sold for the construction of a shopping mall.

The students destroyed properties belonging to the contractor working on the land as well as that of the Lands Commission.

But Mr Amewu has denied claims that the school’s land has been sold to a private developer by the Lands Commission for the building of a shopping mall.

According to him, part of the land, located near the 37 Military Hospital in Accra will be used for an office complex for the Commission.

Meanwhile, the Minister has indicated that the school will be reopened after investigations into the incident are completed.
