Media exaggerated Wesley Girls placement issue – GES

The media has been accused of blowing out of proportion, the issue surrounding the placement of 200 extra students at Wesley Girls High School.

The Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Rev. Solomon Betey in an interview on Radio Ghana described the matter as a “fallacy.”

He questioned why some media houses were carrying this ‘simple issues and exaggerating it” insisting that the numbers being peddled around in the media are untrue.

“I am telling you that the numbers that they mentioned all over the place was exaggerated; they have exaggerated some numbers,” he said.

“We sent the required number that the headmistress wanted in her school. The placement center also added a few to that number because we know very well that it is not all the candidates who go to the schools that the system places them in,” Rev. Betey added.

On Wednesday, several parents besieged the Wesley Girls High School in Cape Coast to protest against the school's refusal to admit their children after the School Placement System put them there.

The situation is reportedly not limited to Wesley Girls High School but across some major schools across the country. Some parents and their wards are stranded as some school heads are turning them away.

According Rev. Betey, this issue concerning Wesley Girls High School has been of great concern to the authorities at the Ghana Education Service “as to why such things should continue to happen in that reputable school.”
