Accra Millennium City school project inaugurated

A three-storey 18-unit classroom block for the Gbegbeyesie A & B Cluster of Schools near Dansoman in the Accra Metropolis has been inaugurated.

The disability-friendly facility, which has a library, science and computer laboratories, is one of the 14 Millennium City school projects being undertaken by the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) in collaboration with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). The project forms part of measures to eradicate the shift school system in the metropolis.

Advice

The Minister of Education, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, said such infrastructure would not only provide a conducive environment for teaching and learning but also encourage students to come to school regularly.

She said the government had invested a lot in education and, therefore, advised the students to make good use of the opportunity, study hard and become enlightened and useful to the society.

Investment

The USAID Deputy Assistant Administrator for the Bureau for Africa, Ms Oren Whyche-Shaw, said her outfit had invested $3.8 million in the construction of six school complexes in Accra.

She described those investments as a key component of the United States efforts to improve basic education in Ghana.

Ms Whyche-Shaw said the USAID was also investing $23.4 million to build district education offices, junior high schools, kindergartens and sanitation facilities in all 10 regions in the country.

Motivation

The Accra Metro Director of Education, Madam Angela Tina Mensah, said access to education was a very important component in achieving academic excellence.

Therefore, such infrastructure development in any form served as a source of motivation for both teachers and students.

She thanked the AMA and USAID Ghana for their laudable initiative and urged the school authorities to maintain the school structure for the benefit of future generations.

Quality education

The Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Dr Alfred Okoe Vanderpuije, commended the chiefs and people in the area for their cooperation in providing the needed environment for the realisation of the project.

He said the new facility would benefit all the communities in the Ablekuma West Constituency.

The Member of Parliament (MP) of the Ablekuma West Constituency, Mrs Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, lauded the government for delivering on its promise.
