Why I was crowned Miss Africa 2016

She is the first Ghanaian to win the contest

Rebecca Asamoah is Miss Africa 2016

“I always say that I’m that simple humble girl who is hardworking and always want to achieve what my set goals are. And I think that was what the judges also saw in me. That I’m that lady who has the drive to change not only myself but others,” the dental hygienist who appeared on Radio Univers’ mid-morning show, Brunch2Lunch on Tuesday said.

Speaking about the experience in the contest, Rebecca described it as extremely amazing. According to her, although she was a week late, she enjoyed herself and has no regrets of participating in it.

“It was great, amazing. I honestly don’t know the adjectives to use. It was an amazing experience coming into contact with great intelligent African women to compete for the crown but with the mind-set of coming together in unity to work hand-in-hand and being able to address some challenges we have as Africans. It’s a blessing. We went through some grooming sections and other amazing processes which made us better people,” she told host Abrantepa.

Rebecca, a dental hygienist, beat eleven finalists shortlisted from an original list of forty contestants from across the continent for the crown. The event came off in Johannesburg, South Africa on Saturday.

She is the first Ghanaian to win the contest. The first Runner-up was Michelo Malambo of Zambia, while South Africa's Jemimah Kandimiri was placed third.

The pageant was created by South African Film Producer Neo Mashishi, who said it is aimed at empowering young African women.

She is seeking to help get solutions to some problems affecting the continent.

“There are a lot of projects to be embarked on… We will be working under education, health, and environment, anything that falls under the Sustainable Development Goals to help alleviate such challenges in our various communities. My management is working on a calendar…,” she intimated.
