Cwesi Oteng welcomes possible exclusion of Gospel Album of the Year

According to him, the move will ensure competition as all genres will be looking forward to the overall Artiste of the Year category.

Gospel Musician, Cwesi Oteng has backed calls for the Gospel Album of the Year category to be scrapped from the 2016 edition of Ghana Music Awards.

“As much as they want to do it, why not? It won’t be a bad idea because I think it would allow music to be looked at broadly. A lot of things will be considered. That includes the full extent of what music is and what goes into music,” he said on Hitz FM’s Daybreak Hitz.

“It’s a completion… I would think that this decision is to further improve music in the country. And if we are going to look at the full extent of its execution, then gospel music is at the right place of competition,” Cwesi Oteng added.

George Quaye, Public Relations Officer of Charterhouse Productions Limited, organisers of the annual Ghana Music Awards had earlier indicated that the board will take a decision on whether or not to maintain the category at this year’s edition.

According to him, it was informed by discussions on various platforms where a section opine that there should not be such a category when the same cannot be said of other genres.

Gifty Osei won the Gospel Album category in 2012 with her Fefeefe album while Cwesi Oteng’s Mercy Project won in 2013. Nyame Eguama by Joyce Blessing and Evangelist Diana Asamoah’s Pentecost Asoredwom won in 2014 and 2015 respectively. The award is mostly given during the Industry Awards night.
