What Have We Gained From Reality Contests?

All is set for grand finale of Vodafone Icons and MTN Hitmaker music reality shows at the National Theatre on Wednesday, 26 November and Friday, 29 November respectively.

Come Wednesday, 5 contestants will battle it out and thrill music fans to their wonderful compositions to climax this year’s Remix Edition of Vodafone Icons at the National Theatre. The grand finale will see Alice, Cena, Chris, Titi and Ratty compete for the grand prize of a brand new Nissan Qashqai, a recording deal at Universal Music Studio, as well as cash prize and souvenirs worth over GH¢ 100,000.

Also,  on November 29th, all eyes will be on the top 5 finalists of MTN Hitmaker as they compete for the ultimate GH¢ 100,000 recording deal prize. Rappers Mac M, and Torgbe will be battling it out with singer, Snow B; Naba, the only lady; and the wildcard who has proven to be really wild, Emperor.

The first two editions of MTN Hitmaker saw Naterial winning in 2012 and Koo Ntakra Akuffo from the Eastern Region winning in 2013.  The maiden edition of Vodafone Icons dubbed Divas Edition saw trio R&M [Rhythm & Melody] winning the competition. Another trio, Black N Peach won the Mixed Edition in 2012 while Ryan won the Streets Edition in 2013.

However, with the heavy publicity and big winning prizes that these winners have enjoyed, they have not been able to leave much impact on the music scene. There have been a more of scandals than hit songs especially with music groups that have Vodafone Icons.  In 2012, R&M suffered some setback after they lost group leader, Denierce due to irreconcilable differences. A new member was later introduced but that couldn’t change the fortunes of the group.  Black N Peach also split before they could even release a major single, with Noella Wiyaala breaking away to start her solo career. Her solo career has thus far been successful, performing on major shows and winning major brand endorsement deals.

Koo Ntakraa has enjoyed some relative success on the internet but not is yet to make any significant impact on radio and television. In fact it is almost safe to conclude that  the rest of the unmentioned winners have are completely missing from the music industry.  So who will win this year’s edition of Vodafone Icons and MTN Hitmaker and would the winners break the jinx to leave a real impact on the music scene? Or perhaps these shows would remain promotions for the big telecommunication companies behind them?
