Preachers’ VGMAs nominations and what it means to urban Gospel

Preachers’ VGMAs nominations and what it means to urban Gospel in Ghana. Find out more below.

Preachers

Preachers are undeniably the biggest urban gospel artiste in Ghana in terms of their influence, following and awards won. They have won numerous gospel awards locally and internationally including, Africa Gospel Music Awards, Ghana Gospel Music Awards and most recently their song “No Juju” won "Most Wanted Rap Song of the Year" at the last Christian Community Music Awards.

Interestingly, Preachers’ nominations at the VGMAs come as a history for their genre because, after several editions of the biggest annual award scheme of the country, VGMA has finally recognized the urban gospel genre with three award nominations.

In retrospect, VGMAs saw Kingzkid, last year competing for the honour of performing on the night of the prestigious VGMAs, of which Dark Suburb emerged as winner. That basically, was the concept of the relatively new "Unsung" category, which was created to give “underground” artists some substantial exposure. Dancehall star, MzVee happens to be first winner of the "Unsung" category in 2014 when it was first implemented.

This year, one of Urban Gospel’s fast rising artiste, Perez has been nominated in the same "Unsung" category. This goes to show that, the fast growing genre, which appears to be a new generation of Gospel music, is making headway. By this, do we foresee urban gospel having it’s own category such as Urban Gospel Artist of the year in the near future? Well, that’s just a thought though.

Besides VGMAs, Preachers have announced their trip to Israel this Easter and the Preachers & Buddies Praise Concert this June. Read more about them at their website www.preachersgh.com
