Review of Ebo Whyte's latest production

'Sankofa' is a play about two distinguished Ghanaian professors who travel to Australia in pursuit of the greatest achievement in their careers only to find themselves at the mercy of someone whom they have once maltreated.

A secret in relationship to the three that has been hidden for so long is about to be revealed with consequences that can destroy their reputations for good.

In the midst of all this, a long lost daughter who was affected by the maltreatment is about to confront her father about this.

There has always been a distinct beauty with plays organised by Ebo Whyte. The lovely set of the hotel was created completely out of wood but had a distinct airiness around that you wouldn't expect from the items used.

The props, including a sofa, a dining table, coffee chairs and tables, a kitchen cabinet hanging out of a wood, were all put to use throughout the play.

And of course, you can’t take away the fact that Roverman plays do not start late. The play was to start at 6.30pm. And it did start at that time.

Each actor in the play, from the smallest to the largest, was awesome in their roles and execution. Every actor had their moments and knew exactly what they were supposed to be doing. Adding a bit of humour and wit, the cast was just splendid.

And yes! The choreography was diverse enough to hold everyone’s attention at the theatre, as each performed theirs very well.

What is more, the vocal performance of each actor cannot be underestimated.  I found it amazing how the cast is able to combine singing with acting in the most impressive way in all plays organised by Ebo Whyte.

The lighting design was also solid, as it suited the mood and atmosphere of each scene in the play.

Beams of spotlights played their own distinct parts in the show. Sound effects used throughout also accompanied much of the action and supplied realism to the play.

The costumes used were also unique to each group of characters; the professors, hoteliers, and guests; everything complemented each other.

A beautifully crafted masterpiece, ‘Sankofa’ left patrons entertained apart from being inspired. The audience were mesmerised by the acting prowess of each of the cast.
