Make sure it fits
How to wear a trouser suit
We show you how to man up in style. Do experiment with patterns and materials
Recommended articles
A well-cut suit, whether you want skinny, slim or wide-leg trousers or a fitted or baggy blazer, provides the foundations for your entire look. Follow the examples of Tess Daly and Isabel Lucas.
Don't squeeze in
Pay particular attention to the fit of your jacket, straining buttons are a health hazard while a too-oversized jacket will make it look like you’re wearing your other half’s clothes.
Don't go bright
Monochromes, dark blues or greys are good. Colour-blocked brights we’re talking to you Liz Hurley, Stefanie Powers and Heidi Klum are bad. Especially when you add the same colour underneath.
Do stick to the basics
Victoria Beckham knows you can’t go wrong with a white shirt. If you’re feeling really adventurous, add a loose black tie in the style of Angelina Jolie and Kourtney Kardashian.
Don’t overdo it
Waistcoats, hats, pocket-watches unless you’re attending a fancy dress party, leave them at home. And never try a coat with tails unless you’re also attending the aforementioned party. A skinny scarf or slim tie though, is a big yes for 2015.
Do sex it up
If you’re small chested, you can even get away with nothing underneath like Brooklyn Decker…button up though.
Don’t take the plunge
Don’t, under any circumstances, do a Spice Girls – a plunge bra and a one-buttoned jacket do not a chic pairing make.
Do wear with flats
Brogues, loafers and even trainers like Alexa Chung's and Ellen's give a simple suit an update while fancy flats will take it straight through to evening.
Don’t forget to be fabulous
When in doubt, throw the rule book out the window and be Liza Minelli, Katharine Hepburn or Marlene Dietrich. Have you ever seen suits worn so fabulously?
