It might have taken her 80 years, but Barbara Beskind has finally landed her dream job as an inventor.

"I learned a lot about gravity because I fell off so many times."

As a woman growing up in the Great Depression, Ms Beskind was unable to fulfil her dream of studying engineering.

Her high school career counsellor told her engineering schools would not accept women.

After serving in the US Army, she became an occupational therapist and over the years learned to paint.

However, two years ago, Ms Beskind realised her childhood dream when she was hired by Silicon Valley design firm IDEO.

The unlikely pairing came about after Ms Beskind applied for a job as a tech designer at the company.

"It took me about two months to write my resume, paring it down from nine pages," she said.

"Then I wrote the letter and sent it in by snail mail."

On hiring her, IDEO associate partner Gretchen Addi said: "Our culture is telling us, ageing equals decline and Barbara is very solidly standing there and saying, you know, 'I'm gonna call you on that.'''

Ms Beskind works in IDEO's Palo Alto offices in California one day a week on projects primarily aimed at the ageing.
