The fetish priest of the Densu river has been manhandled by some angry youth for failing to help them retrieve the body of 19-year-old Dennis Yaw Ayamaba who got drowned during a swimming competition on Monday, October 3 at Akwadum in the Eastern region.

The angry youth accused the fetish priest of taking advantage of the situation by robbing the family of the deceased in the disguise of performing rituals in the river to help local swimmers to retrieve the body.

According to Kumasi-based Ultimate FM, the fetish priest smeared pepper on the bodies of the local swimmers after performing the rituals assuring them that the body would be retrieved but several hours of search proved futile.

He was however rescued by some residents in the area when the angry residents attempted to  beat him after he demanded for more money which he claimed could enable him perform another ritual.

Background

A 19-year-old boy has been reported drowned in the Densu River at Akwadum in the New Juabeng Municipality of the Eastern Region during a swimming competition for a GHC120-prize.

Dennis Yaw Ayamba, and two others who were engaged in the competition on Monday around 3.00 pm dived from the top of the bridge over the Densu River, which links Suhum to the New Juabeng Municipality.

The tragedy happened when on the third dive, the boy failed to come out of the river, raising suspicions that he had been drowned, 3news reports.

The family of the boy was alerted and a group of young men was subsequently contracted to search for his body after a libation was poured.

The team was, however, unsuccessful after hours of search.

Police in the area have since been alerted about the incident.

However, as at the time of filing this story, the police were yet to visit the scene.

The drowned teenager and his friends went to swim in the Densu river which has its water level increased as a result of the heavy downpours in the New Juaben area in recent times.
