Police officer rapes, murders 22 prostitutes, to clean up the streets of his community

A Russian police officer did not like the way prostitutes were operating in his hometown, he embarked on raping and killing them to cleanse the streets.

Mikhail Popkov wanted to rid his streets of prostitutes.

A 50-year-old Russian police officer, Mikhail Popkov, has been arrested and charged with the rape and murder of 22 commercial sex workers because he wanted to clean up the streets of his community by ridding them of the prostitutes.

Popkov admitted in court to luring the women into his police car and driving to them to secluded spots where he would use a number of different weapons including axes, knives, screwdrivers and iron rods to murder then and then rape their dead bodies.

Popkov said he targeted sex workers and his motive was to cleanse his hometown of Angarsk from prostitutes.

He is staring at life behind bars but his 48-year-old wife, Elena, still believes that he did the right thing and would support him till the end.

"We have been married for 28 years. If I suspected that he did something wrong, I would have divorced him.

I support him, I believe him. If he were to be released right now, I would continue to live with him."

All of the murders took place before the year 2000, and Popkov had managed to avoid police for a number of years. He told police that he stopped the killings after picking up an STD from one of his victims.
