Man drinks rat poison after fiancee dumped him

37-year-old Emeka Odigwe, could have been dead, but for divine intervention, after he allegedly drank rat poison after his fiancée called off the union, in Warri, Delta State.

According to reports, the Economics graduate of the Delta State University, Abraka, attempted to take his life after his long time lover dumped him for another man after he proposed to her, as he was rescued and rushed to a hospital where he is currently receiving treatment.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Celestina Kalu, who confirmed the incident, said Odigwe was at a location called T-Junction in Warri by a police patrol team on routine duty, adding that he was found almost lifeless gasping for breath around 10:30 pm on Saturday, July 18.

DSP Kalu also disclosed that it was a clear case of attempted suicide as a note was recovered beside the dying young man which read:

“I fell heartbroken and rejected by someone, whom I loved and had given my heart to over the years in the midst of a get together with my friends; I’d rather die and return to my mother’s earth.”

His younger sister identified as Evelyn, reportedly narrated to the police that her brother had been dating the lady for more than three years and just proposed to her recently in the presence of their entire family, thinking he had found his soul mate, before the bubble burst.

"Apparently, she was just using my brother as a part time boyfriend as she had an off and on relationship with an American based man.

We realised that shortly before Emeka proposed to her, the guy had been back in the country and they were preparing to get married and travel abroad together. That was why she rejected Emeka's proposal.

My brother drank the rat poison because he was really emotional over the girl’s attitude.”

The police said its men recovered six sachets of rat poisons on the ground where the victim laid.
