Anonymous releases list of 9,200 ISIS twitter accounts

Technology is put to good use as the Islamic State’s social media presence just took a huge hit.

The hacker collective Anonymous has published a list of 9,200 Twitter accounts which they say are associated with ISIS, according to The Independent.

The Twitter handles were posted in a document by privately funded cyber security firm XRSone, and compiled by an account called CtrlSec, whose goal is “to expose ISIS and Al-Qaida members active on Twitter.”

In a message, XRSone urges people to share the list so that Twitter will be alerted and have them taken down.

"This list was created by hundreds of users and compiled by #CtrlSec. We’re releasing it to hold Twitter accountable. I encourage you all to do your duty not only as a citizen of the world but also as a member of the internet community and re-post this on social media. The more attention it gets the more likely it becomes Twitter takes action in removing these accounts and making a serious impact on the ability of ISIS to spread propaganda and recruit new members. You don’t have to be tech savvy to contribute, simply clicking retweet or like could mean the difference between almost 10 thousand active accounts or 10 thousand suspended ones. Help us fight!"

Anonymous has been involved in a cyberwar of sorts with the Islamic terrorist group dubbed #OpIsis for several months, and ISIS recently threatened to kill Twitter founder, Jack Dorsey, in light of the social network’s attempts at silencing them by suspending their accounts.

A recent report from the Brookings Institution found that ISIS controls at least 46,000 Twitter accounts, so this is certainly a nice chunk of them but there are plenty more out there.
