Married Suzanne Greenwood, 43, chose to end her life at the same spot as ex-boyfriend Chris Evans, 30, killed himself a year-and-a-half earlier.

Her grief-stricken husband David Greenwood, 47, said his wife had become addicted to sleeping tablets after secretly buying them in huge batches from India and Hong Kong.

Her crippling insomnia meant she often struggled for days without sleep.

At an inquest in Bolton into her death, it was said that Mrs Greenwood purchased the powerful sleeping drug Zopiclone - only available on prescription in the UK - over the internet in her fight against the illness.

In total, she bought 8,000 pills.

Her grieving husband explained how he tried to support his wife with her insomnia problems.

He said problem started when in May 2013 her ex-boyfriend, musician and singer-songwriter Chris Evans, was found hanged at Haslam Park in Deane, Bolton.

Devastated, Mrs Greenwood was said to from then on be largely confined to her bed, struggling to sleep.

He husband said: "Sue tried everything - hypnotherapy, acupuncture and CBT [cognitive behavioural therapy].

'Unfortunately, she resorted to accessing sleeping tablets, which should only be prescribed by GPs, online, and became dependent on them.

'It's totally wrong that people can get these things on the Internet, but how do you stop it?'

Highlighting the case's sheer tragedy, a coroner revealed Mrs Greenwood's death was the third this year involving tablets bought over the web.
