Man docked for allegedly assaulting police officer

The defendant of Airport Road, Abuja, was charged with mischief, resisting arrest and assault on public servant to deter him from performing his lawful duty.‎

Okodu denied committing the offence and was granted bail in the sum of N50,000 and one surety in like sum.

The judge, Alhaji Umar Kagarko, adjourned the case until June 28 for hearing.

The prosecutor, Fedelix Okugbuwe, told the court that one Okoroafor Kalu of Ido village, Abuja, reported the matter at the Garki Police Station on May 5.

He said that while Kalu was driving his vehicle along UTC Garki, Abuja, he suddenly saw the defendant on the road and immediately applied his brake.

He said the car stopped without touching the defendant, but the defendant went ahead to break Kalu’s wind screen without any provocation.

The prosecutor said that Sgt. Ibrahim Halidu, attached to Garki Police Station, attempted to arrest the defendant‎, but he resisted arrest.

Okugbuwe said in the process, the defendant assaulted the police officer by grabbing his uniform, in order to deter him from performing his lawful duty.

He said that in the process, the defendant damaged the officer’s uniform valued at N4, 000.

The offences contravened Sections 327, 172 and 267 of the Penal Code.
