Readers say it's not advisable for people with AS genotype to get married

PNP readers vote against two people with AS genotype getting married.

Worried man

A Pulse reader, Jason, wrote in about how his parents have refused to give their blessing to his wedding to his fiancée, because they are both of the same AS genotype.

The parents are afraid of what will happen to his children in future but he is bent on living with Cynthia, not minding the fact that he could lose his children as there is a 50-50 chance they could either come out as AS or SS carriers.

Part of his letter reads:

"My name is Jason. I am 34 years old and I work with one of the leading telecommunications companies in Nigeria. I am in love with a lady I have made up my mind to live with for the rest of my life.

Cynthia, that is her name, is such an angel that life will be practically useless for me if I don't marry her.

But there is a snag: her genotype is AS and mine is also AS. I have heard and read that people with the same genotype could get married since there is a 50% chance that children born of such parents would not be affected.

But my parents, especially my mother would not hear of it and they have vowed that they would never give us their blessings. Even when our family doctor said we have a chance, they have stood their grounds."

Based on his question, this was the PNP poser for the day:
