22-yr-old man gets N500,000 bail for defilement

Wale, a resident of Magbon along Badagry Expressway in Lagos, is standing trial for one-count charge of defilement.

The Chief Magistrate, Mrs B.O. Osunsanmi, granted the bail with two sureties in like sum.

He directed that one of the sureties must be gainfully employed, while the other should be a landlord in Lagos State.

She said the sureties should also provide evidence of tax payment to the government.

The magistrate directed that the case file should be duplicated and a copy sent to the State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for advice.

The case was adjourned until November 23.

‎‎The Prosecutor, Insp. Simeon Imhonwa, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Sept. 7 at about 7.25 p.m. at his residence.

‎‎He said the accused forcefully had carnal knowledge of the girl and also threatened to kill her if she disclosed the crime he committed.

“The girl’s parents, who reside in the same compound with the accused, reported the case to the police after their daughter narrated her ordeal,” Imhonwa said.

‎The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State 2015.

Section 137 of the law prescribes life imprisonment upon conviction for rape.

‎The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.
