Groom's mother dies in car crash on her way home from son's wedding

A groom's happy day turned into a tragedy after he heard the news of his mother's less than 24 hours after he became a married man.

57-yr-old Mary Baird fondly called 'Marie' by friends and family died in a car crash on the way home from her son's wedding.

40-yr-old Martin Colquhoun had tied the knot a few hours before the tragic incident to his bride, 36-yr-old Michelle.

Baird was hit by a car fleeing the police, she was in the car with husband 52-yr-old Jamie when the incident occurred.

The couple woke up the next day to a text message from an uncle informing the newlyweds that the groom's mother had died, Mirror UK reports.

“In the space of five seconds everything was torn apart. The news was devastating and so surreal. It was hard to believe at first.

“I had been high as a kite from getting married the night before. I went to being almost unable to comprehend what had happened, ” Martin said.

“We have wedding cards in our home with sympathy cards next to them. We are all devastated," the bride Michelle said.

“We had a wonderful day on Saturday and it was great to see everyone.

“At around 8am on Sunday morning, we noticed we had loads of missed calls from family members but didn’t think much of it," the devastated groom said.

Mary a biscuit factory worker died when the taxi taking her home to Easterhouse, Glasgow, from the wedding in Cumnock, Ayrshire, was hit by a car the early hours of Sunday.

Her husband sustained injuries and is in serious condition in the hospital.

“She was a really nice woman, and had loads of friends and family who will miss her a lot.

“My mum just got on with everyone, and didn’t have a bad word to say about anybody.

“She was always the peacemaker, and was genuinely loved by all, Martin spoke of his late mother.

“Jamie is still in hospital just now but I would like to say to him that our thoughts are with him. He is serious but stable, but you can see it in his face that he is devastated.

“He has lost his wife who was everything to him. They did everything together. Whenever I called my mum, she was always out and about with him or telling me about the trips they were planning.

“Jamie has to go back to the home he shared with my mum when he gets out of hospital but he is still part of our family, and always will be. We will always be there for him,” he said.
