Akple and Abobi Tadzi for life

Abobi Tadzi, the Volta Regional version of Fante Fante?

Abobi is the Ewe name for what other Ghanaians popularly call "Keta School Boys". Mind you, Abobi is quite different from "One Man Thousand"; the fish used for Abobi Tadzi are a little bigger than One Man Thousand.

Simply, Abobi Tadzi is fish tomato sauce. It goes best with fresh, hot Akple. The Volta Region has so much to teach Ghanaian food enthusiasts.

There are varied recipes for Abobi Tadzi. The recipes range from seasoning your fresh Abobi with onions, ginger and garlic and tossing them into freshly-ground pepper, which is the Tadzi by the way. Other people, like my friend Semekor, blends her tomato, pepper and onions, prepares tomato stew with that before adding her Abobi.

The most interesting recipe I came across was blending the tomato, onion and pepper into a smooth puree before putting it on fire to cook for some time. When this sauce is appropriately cooked, the Abobi which at this point should have been seasoned and boiled is added to the tomato sauce; no oil at all is needed! It's like thickened light soup, if you will.

Woezor fa Ewe dukƆ, that's how to say, welcome to the Volta Region, as the Onga Efie Aduane takes you on this yummy delightful trip of discovering new and exciting old recipes. Follow the Onga Efie Adune Series and your taste buds will say thank you. What’s for dinner this weekend? Enjoy your Abobi Tadzi with Akple.
