The Controller and Accountant General’s Department has released an amount of GH₵756, 000 for the payment of outstanding salary arrears for nurses in the 3 psychiatric hospitals in the country.

This follows the decision by psychiatric nurses to lay down their tools after what they described as deceit on the part of the government for failing  to pay them.

A statement by the Ministry of Health stated that the payment was made “to about 133 nurses who form part of some nurses to be paid outstanding arrears. Currently staff of the Ministry of Health and Controller and Accountant General’s Department are keying in the inputs for payment of the rest of the salary arrears as the system has been opened for this purpose.”

It also stated government’s commitment to “ensuring that all outstanding arrears are worked on and paid in the shortest possible time.”

The Ministry of Health has therefore implored all striking nurses to return to work as government continue to take the necessary steps to pay all their outstanding salary arrears.

Over 7,000 members of the Coalition of Unpaid Nurses and Midwives on Monday declared an indefinite strike to demand the payment of salaries owed them by government in the last three years.

They claimed the decision was because several attempts to have their grievances addressed have yielded no positive results.
