Thirty-two school children, two teachers, and a minibus driver were killed in Tanzania on Saturday when their vehicle swerved off a steep road and fell into a ravine, authorities have said.

The students killed in the accident, aged 12 and 13, were on their way to another school to take an exam.

“The accident happened when the bus was descending on a steep hill in rainy conditions,” Charles Mkumbo, the Arusha regional police commander said.

“We are still investigating the incident to determine if it was caused by a mechanical defect or human error on the part of the driver,” he added.

Meanwhile, President John Magufuli has described the accident as a “national tragedy.”

"The accident has cut short the dreams of students who were preparing to serve the nation," Magufuli said.

More than 3,000 people are killed each year on Tanzania's roads, according to government data.
