After someone described Michelle Obama as an "ape in heels" on Facebook, the mayor commented, "just made my day".
The mayor of Clay, a town in West Virginia, has resigned after she appeared to support a Facebook comment by a friend that described Michelle Obama as ‘an ape in heels.’
On Facebook, Pamela Taylor (who works for the local development authority) said that she was «it will be so refreshing to have a classy, beautiful, dignified First Lady back in the White House. I'm tired of seeing (sic) a Ape in heels."
The mayor, Beverly Whaling, then responded: «Just made my day Pam".
Although no names were mentioned, it is a clear reference to Melanie Trump’s taking on the role of first lady in January 2017.
There has been a huge backlash against the mayor and her friend for their comments
This is not the first time the Michelle Obama or her family have been the subject of racist commentary. In October, Dan Johnson, a Republican candidate running for the Kentucky Legislature, posted a photo of Barack Obama and the first lady with ape-like features.
