Security concerns over the Olympics are increasing with Australian rowers and other athletes being barred from leaving their accommodation at night after two rowing coaches were robbed at knifepoint Ipanema Beach.

The attack followed the gunpoint robbery of Australian Paralympic sailor Liesl Tesch and team official Sarah Ross in June.

The Australian Olympic Committee's security chief Greg Nance told Seven Network that the two rowing coaches were "violently assaulted" when they were robbed at Ipanema Beach on Friday.

The pair were approached by two teenage boys, with one pulling out a knife and demanding money, stuff.co.nz reports.

One of the coaches was grabbed around the throat before the attackers fled with credit cards, mobile phones and an Australian team blazer.

As a result, athletes based outside the village had been advised not to leave the team's accommodation after 6pm, and now had a security guard stationed in their foyer and a dedicated car for travel.

Journalists in Rio to cover the event have also been victims of robberies, Brazil's Noticias ao Minuto reported Rio 2016 had asked police to investigate whether workers in the Olympic Village had a robbery scheme underway, after a Japanese TV station also had equipment stolen while filming inside the village.

Also, an Australian photographer was robbed of A$40,000 (about 120, 000 cedi) of gear while at a Rio cafe, in an incident that was believed to have been well-planned, stuff.co.nz reported.

On Saturday night, a Portuguese government minister was robbed at knifepoint in the suburb of Lagoa, next to Ipanema.

Russia says its team house - used for functions during the Games - was robbed during the Opening Ceremony, with three laptops and a camera stolen.
