Ghana admonished to invest in science and art

This call was made on the sidelines of an ongoing exhibition programme at the Science and Technology Museum in Accra, organised by blaxTARLINES under the theme, “Orderly Disorderly”.

According to organisers, the programme which started 30 June and will be ending on the first of September has seen an appreciable increase in the number of audience so far compared to the previous years.

There are several interesting artistic works on display, ranging from electronic gadgets to any other things one could think of.

In an interview with Pulse News, one of the curators, Mawuenya Amudzi said that the profession is gradually gaining momentum in reliance and has the potential to partly address the high level of unemployment in the country.

Mawuenya Amudzi however lamented lack of financial support as one of the major challenges artists face in their field of work. He said artists have to depend on their personal earnings to fund the arts for the benefit of the entire society.

As to whether it is a lucrative venture to engage in and how one could generate income from it, Mr. Amudzi said the only way to make income is when someone expresses interest in the artistic work, but the initial motive is usually not to make money.

One might be wondering whether the works of this Artists are impactful in any way to inspire either government or any investor to support it financially. But Mawenya Amudzi believes that artistic works have contributed greatly in changing attitudes and societal behavior by criticizing and drawing attention to conducts that are inimical to the welfare of the general society, hence the need to take their work seriously.

He has not only called for financial support, but would also like to see a complete overhaul of the School Curriculum right from the basic level up to the tertiary to make adequate room for the study of art.

Meanwhile, some of the audience at the Museum whom the News team interacted with have expressed delight at the creative art works on display and the impact it has made on them.
