Christmas is here, there will be food and drinks everywhere. The yummy cakes, spicy meat, creamy sauces and all kinds of deliciously fattening meals will be asking you to take a bite and you will be tempted to, why not?  It’s the end of the year there is so much to be grateful for, if for nothing at all, you are still alive and so go ahead and eat and make merry. But, for sure you want to fit in your clothes come January when you have to resume work, don’t you? So, how do you enjoy the season’s delicious goodness and still keep your weight in check?

Don’t overdo it

You gain weight when you eat more calories than you burn. It doesn’t matter if it’s just a snack. Snacks have calories and so do drinks. Remember, to consume everything in good measure. Use small plates, many people have the habit of eating whatever is on their plate, you will be surprised that you will get as much satisfied with the amount of food that will fit comfortably on a salad plate.  If you ever feel like you need to loosen your belt, or need clothes that are more comfortable after eating, you have overeaten.

Eat when you are eating

Don’t eat when you are watching T.V or having a chat with your best friend on WhatsApp. The more absent minded you are about what you are eating, the greater the chances are that you will over eat. When you are eating, focus on just that, taste your food and take your time to chew properly. Sit down at the table and enjoy every bit of the meal.

Know what you are eating

Obviously, if you cook your meals yourself, you don’t have to worry about this. But it’s that time of the year when we visit family and friend and eat with them. It is perfectly to ask what’s in a meal. For people who have a lot of allergies, this is normal behaviour, you don’t want to react to something and make your host feel bad. Even if you don’t have allergies, knowing what you are eating helps you control how much you consume.  Don’t forget to ask even if you are at a restaurant or a fast food joint, fast food is more likely to make you gain weight than homemade food. Wherever you eat and whatever you eat, leave plenty room for some fruits and vegetables. Your body needs it.

I know it is part of your New Year resolution to exercise regularly, eat healthy and so on, just like last year’s resolution. While it is very easy to postpone exercising to a future date, it is important to note that, there are very basic things you can do at home to keep you active. It true that is easier to eat less than it is to burn off extra calories with a workout, but it is generally unhealthy not to do any physical activity at all, no matter how little you eat. Dance to your favourite song. Walk to the neighbourhood supermarket instead of driving, pound fufu.
