Long distance relationships can be tough on any couple, even if they say that distance makes the heart grow fonder.

You want each other so much that a few extra miles can’t get between the two of you.

And why should it?

Being without each other for a while shouldn’t stop your love from blossoming if you both have the same vision for the relationship.

Here are 10 ways to make your long distance relationship work.

1. Suggest doing the same thing

It could be a movie, listening to an album or even reading the same book.

Whatever it is, get stuck into together so you both have something to talk about when on the phone.

You’re still able to create moments together by simply sharing your thoughts on something you’ve both spent your spare time doing.

2. Surprise each other with the most random gifts and gestures

Sending each other random gifts are always great as it shows that you’re thinking about them, even if they’re not close by.

So forget flowers and send a pizza with a cute note instead.

3. Write each other ‘open when…’ letters

‘Open when you’re feeling lonely’ or ‘open when you want to laugh’ – these are messages kept for moments when you want to be there for your partner but can’t be physically.

4. Play online games

Whether it’s downloading the Love Quiz app on your iPhone or World Of Warcraft, use these moments as a bonding session no matter how far or close you are.

5. Video calling

Video calling has been around for years and most times it’s better than making an old-fashioned phone call.

There’s nothing sweeter than being able to look at your partner as you hold a conversation, so get used to Skype and FaceTime.

6. Keep yourself busy

It’s always a good idea to give yourself work to do in case you start missing them too much.

Join a club, start a new hobby and throw yourself into your work.

Then share your pursuits with your partner each day.

7. Think long-term

Relationship coach Jay Cadet said it best – ‘long distance should be treated like a season of your relationship and not a type of a relationship and that means to treat distance as a temporary thing and have a plan to end it.’

Remember why you’re in this temporary situation and make sure you both have an understanding as to where you see the relationship heading.

8. Make visits

Not waking up to your partner every morning can be a pain.

You start to miss everything about them right from their morning breath to just being able to stroke their hair gently with your fingers.

Try to arrange trips to see each other depending on your schedule and financial situation.

Spending quality time together is vital in any relationship so, when you do finally meet up, use this time wisely.

Count the days till you see each other again or until you’re together for good.

This will help give an optimistic feeling about the future.
