One woman’s account of her shower experience gone so wrong is catching fire. (Pun intended. You’ll see what we mean.)

The blogger behind I Know, I Need To Stop Talking (who the Daily Mail identifies as Kathryn Kendall) decided to scrub up for the first time with Original Source Tea Tree & Mint Mint Shower Gel—and the advertised “7,927 tingling real mint leaves” within the product were a little intense. “I washed my arms and shaved underneath them. I washed my neck, breasts, stomach and back. Thus far, it had been a positively first class bathing experience,” she posted on Facebook.

She goes on to say how she tried washing it off her vagina, a sensation she likened to the feeling of being “scrubbed by ants wearing ice skates laced with chili sauce.” It took 12 hours, she says, for things to calm down below.

So what the heck happened? “Some women truly can use anything in their genital area and feel okay, but some ingredients can cause burning and irritation to the delicate vulvar and vaginal areas,” says Alyssa Dweck, M.D., a gynecologist in New York and author of A to Z For Your V. In this case, the essential oils tea tree and peppermint leaf are the likely offenders.

When you wash up, think less is more. “The vagina is a self-cleaning oven, it doesn’t need to be scrub-a-dub-dubbed, especially on the inside,” says Dweck. She recommends sticking with a mild, moisturizing soap like Cetaphil or Dove Sensitive Skin, and never washing inside your vagina. Stay safe, folks!
